A non-profit website that shows the work, not slogans

We designed and built the website for Footprint Foundation, a sustainability and philanthropy non-profit working on Nepal's trails and in its communities. The site explains six programmes and gives volunteers, partners and the press a way in.

The client

Footprint Foundation works with trekking communities, local governments and volunteers. Its starting point is that the environmental and the human cost of tourism in Nepal are one problem, so its programmes cover trail clean-ups and tree planting as well as the well-being of guides and porters.

Its stated approach is local ownership: every clean-up has a local waste route, and every plantation has a community responsible for the saplings after planting day.

What they needed

The foundation's voice is direct and sceptical of easy claims. Its FAQ says it publishes planting figures alongside survival rates, because a planting number alone tells you nothing. The site needed a design that carries that tone, with strong field photography and short, plain sections instead of campaign language.

It also needed room to grow: a page for every programme, a news section for field notes and explainers, and a reports page ready for annual, programme and financial reporting as it's published.

What we built

A WordPress site organised around the programmes, with the governance and get-involved pages around them. All of this is live on footprint-foundation.org.

Six programme pages

Responsible tourism, trail and destination clean-ups, zero waste and eco-crafts, tree plantation, guide and porter well-being, and women, youth and inclusion.

About and governance

Mission, team, messages from the chairperson and the CEO, partners and supporters, affiliations, and a reports and transparency page.

Get involved

Volunteer and partner-with-us pages that set expectations plainly, down to what a clean-up day or a plantation day actually involves.

News and explainers

A news section with category filters, currently carrying explainers on porter work, tree survival, leave-no-trace habits and trail waste.

FAQ and gallery

Plain answers on volunteering, what happens to collected rubbish and how tree planting is counted, plus a gallery page.

How we worked

This is how we run website projects of this kind.

  1. Agree the structure first

We start from the organisation's audiences and the content it already has, and agree a sitemap and page types before any design work.

  2. Design the key templates

Home, a listing page and a detail page get designed and reviewed first. Everything else reuses those patterns.

  3. Build on WordPress

Pages are built as reusable Elementor templates so the client's team can add news, people and reports without a developer.

  4. Load content and test

We move content in, check forms, mobile layouts and page speed, and fix what the review turns up.

  5. Launch and hand over

After go-live we walk the team through editing and keep supporting the site if they want us to.

For another website we rebuilt, see the ShardaGroup case study.
